COVID Testing Q&A

What is COVID-19 testing?

COVID-19 testing is a diagnostic test that uses a nasal swab to detect active coronavirus infections, or positive cases of the virus. Getting tested for COVID-19 allows you to take precautions as needed to prevent spreading the virus to other people.

COVID Testing by Dr. Schechter also offers COVID-19 antibody testing, which is a diagnostic blood test that lets you know if you’ve been infected with COVID-19 in the past and have protective antibodies.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Some people infected with COVID-19 have very mild symptoms, while others can experience:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Sore throat
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting

Your symptoms might be mild, moderate, or severe and life-threatening in some cases. COVID-19 symptoms often appear within 2-14 days after being exposed to the virus.

If you’re an older adult or you have underlying medical conditions, such as lung disease, heart disease, or diabetes, you have a higher chance of developing severe COVID-19 symptoms or complications.

What should I expect during COVID-19 testing?

COVID-19 testing uses a nasal swab to collect a sample of secretions from the upper part of your nostril or the back of your throat. Your specialist rotates a cotton swab several times to get a good sample before removing it. The test takes just a few seconds to complete.

The COVID Testing by Dr. Schechter team can come to your home to complete COVID testing for free. They also can test all guests who attend large events.

What happens after I receive my COVID-19 test results?

You can expect the results of a COVID-19 test within 12-36 hours. If you test positive, avoid contact with other people to prevent spreading the illness. Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer, get plenty of sleep, and drink a lot of fluids.

Contact your doctor if you experience severe symptoms, have difficulty breathing, or need post-COVID treatment.
